Arts and Recreation in the Triangle

If you love cultural amenities as well as recreation in the great outdoors, you'll find that the Triangle offers boundless opportunities to enjoy yourself.

North Carolina is a little slice of heaven for golfers. Enthusiasts often relocate here because the climate practically allows them to hit the links nearly year-round! The Triangle boasts a wide range of courses for everyone, from weekend duffers to scratch players looking to challenge a PGA or TPC course.

If spectator sports are your cup of tea, there are several professional athletic tournaments throughout the year. The Triangle, as part of the Atlantic Coast Conference, offers the best in college basketball, football and a host of team sports featuring nationally ranked NCAA teams. If you enjoy professional sports, the Triangle is home to the 2006 Stanley Cup Champions Carolina Hurricanes as well as two top minor league baseball teams, the Carolina Mudcats and the world-famous Durham Bulls (and yes, they're the ones from the movie “Bull Durham”).

Public Parks

Parks and greenways are beyond plentiful in the Triangle along with numerous soccer fields and stadiums. Raleigh's Pullen Park, just one of the Capital City's many parks, offers kiddie boats, a swimming pool, an amusement center, an antique merry-go-round and much more. Raleigh is also home to Umstead State Park, which features miles of hiking and mountain-biking trails amid dense pine and hardwood forests. In Chapel Hill, you can play a round of tennis at Oakwood Park, hike the trails at Cedar Falls Park or swim a few laps at the Community Center — and have plenty of parks left to discover. And Durham boasts the spectacular Sarah P. Duke Gardens as well as the Eno River State Park.

Another bonus of living in the Triangle is that the Appalachian Mountains and their many recreational offerings (including hiking, white-water rafting and the spectacular Blue Ridge Parkway) are just a few hours' drive. If your interests are the beach and its beautiful shoreline, simply head east. Many points on the North Carolina coast can be easily reached in under three hours, including the historic communities of Wilmington and Beaufort.

If the arts are more your cup of tea, you'll find a panoply of arts and cultural opportunities at your fingertips. Whether you go for opera, concerts, Broadway shows, ballet, local theatre, galleries, film or museums, this region has what it takes to satisfy your cultural cravings. There's Durham's American Dance Festival, Raleigh's North Carolina Museum of Art, Chapel Hill's Ackland Art Museum, the Carrboro Arts Center, the North Carolina Symphony, the Durham Blues Festival and Centerstage — and that's just scratching the surface!
