Upstate South Carolina Business

Upstate South Carolina, once known as the “Textile Center of the South,” today is home to a diversified economy. Businesses include a variety of manufacturing, engineering, banking, electronics and transportation opportunities. The region’s proximity to the Port of Charleston and the Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport makes it especially attractive to new businesses or those looking to relocate. Employers are lured by the region’s low cost of living, plus the quality education, cultural and sports amenities for employees and their families.

International Business

This area has especially seen growth in international business in the past several years. This is thanks, in part, to the opening of the Bayerische Motoren Werke (BMW) facility in Spartanburg in the 1990s. As a result, the Upstate region has become home to many national and international corporations, some of which include Michelin, Datastream Systems Inc., Aimco and Bausch and Lomb.

Along with the increasing business community, the region’s housing market has experienced a steady growth. Schools, affordable housing and retail shopping options contribute to the family-oriented environment, retaining the Upstate natives and attracting newcomers.

Due to the region’s solid infrastructure and attractive quality of life, the Upstate has rapidly become a “hot spot” in the state and in the country, and will only continue to grow.
